Healthy persons are capable of meeting their own hygiene needs, whereas ill or physically handicapped persons may require the nurse's assistance to carry out routine hygiene practices illness, hospitalisation and industrialisation may demand modifications in hygiene practices. The nurse determines a client’s ability to perform self care and provides hygienic care according to the client needs and preferences. In these situations the nurse helps the client to continue sound hygienic practices and has an opportunity to teach the client and family members regarding hygiene. Hygienic measures cover a variety of basic physical needs that clients are often unable to meet themselves promoting independence and participation in personal hygiene which is a part of the nurses role. This book is completely based on the old proverb saying that “Health is wealth”. The Indian Nursing Council has recognised the importance of personal hygiene to the nurse, it has included it as an integral part of the syllabus recommended for schools of nursing in India. This book has been especially prepared to cover this syllabus. Besides the student nurse who is preparing for the basic course in nursing, others who will find the book helpful are health visitors, sister tutors and sister administrators. N.K. Anand is a postgraduate in psychology and commerce. He has obtained his Master degrees from Meerut University. He holds Post- graduate Diploma in Computer Application from the same university. Mr. Anand is prolific author and has to his credit over one dozen books and more than twenty-five research papers and articles for psychology. Shikha Goel is a postgraduate in Zoology from Delhi University, 1992 and also completed her Postgraduate Diploma in Computer Application from Aptech. Mrs. Goel is prolific author and has to her credit over one dozen books and more than ten research papers and articles spanning over Nursing, and Zoology problems.
