Neurodegeneration is the gradual loss of neurons, and neuronal structure and function. This is the cause of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, etc. Research in neurodegeneration suggests that there exists several similarities between these disorders such as induced cell death and atypical protein assemblies.
